2000 A.D.

And then there was Beheaded. Hardly earth shattering with its mere 3 minutes screentime. But it was no less than a breakthrough for its creator who considers it his first successful independent film (“success” meaning a finished, accomplished work) and the start of his filmmaking career. It was also the first of what would become a trilogy of Mind My Gap short films. It was not the very first appearance ever of the Langeman (who had appeared in one of The Four Trailers of Dog in 1993) and it was not his final design either. But this was the quintessential Langeman, singing his anthem while losing his head.

And he continues to do so. His looks may have developed but he still ends up decapitated in Jona/Tomberry (2005), the third and final installment of the trilogy. The doer of evil was, of course, Virgil Horn. Until the moment of the film’s release Virgil just was a voice in Mind My Gap (not counting his part in The Four Trailers which luckily had stayed under the radar). Virgil and his minions had been infesting My Gap since the start, but this was the first time we were allowed to admire him in all his glory. His next showdown with the Langemanne was not so fortunate; a few years later he would reincarnate as a giant swallow in The Monster of Nix (2011).

(the rise and fall of the legendary) Anglobilly Feverson (2001) is a sequel to Jona although it was released before. We meet Diddybob in the mountains, after the fishbaby shooting incident. In the online graphic novel the story was presented as a moving storyboard “for my film” (as Virgil’s voice over proudly claims) in Map4: Sky. Only few expected that the film got actually made.

The three shorts (and more (including those infamous The Four Trailers of Dog)) are released on a splendid DVD.

Some episodes within the online graphic novel are downright short films and a couple have even been released as such. Big White/Big Black (2006) and The Evil Wicked Whale (2012) were never released in theaters or festivals but have both been published online as episodes as well as shorts. No Place Like Home (2008) and Lonely Bones (2013) were successfully released as standalone short films. To complicate things even further, they are also the first half of a tetralogy featuring Rosto's music project Thee Wreckers (see the spin-offs and music pages).

Mind My Gap is a complex universe, rather than “just” a graphic novel. And yet it managed to spawn two alternate universes: One is the fairy tale world of the Langemanne and the other is drenched in the sounds and likes of Thee Wreckers.

The latter manifests itself in a tetralogy (series of four) of musical shorts based on original songs. Although it lacks an overall storyline these “visual songs” do connect: Lonely Bones (2013) continues where No Place Like Home (2008) left off and the third short, Splintertime (2015), consequently picks up where Bones ended. The project overlaps with Mind My Gap as No Place and Bones were also released as the final episodes in the graphic novel. Splintertime and the fourth installment Reruns (2018) take place outside out the boundaries of My Gap.

The realm of the Langemanne, the mysterious forest creatures (appearing in Mind My Gap's Map9: Forest), can be paid a visit in The Monster of Nix (2011). This animated musical 30 minute film features the voice talents of Terry Gilliam, Tom Waits, eyeball-rockers The Residents and The Dø's Olivia Merilahti and Rosto's musical mischief is performed by the acclaimed Metropole Orchestra. One day the director hopes to return to the dark, yet light, world of Nix.

Meet Diddybob and Buddybob! Everything seems hunky-dory for the happy presenter duo who live their life on the set of their TV show Living Interior. Off air they don’t have the slightest notion of an outside. They live without questions or doubts because everything is taken care of: Every day their interior is changed and even more magnificent than the previous one. Until questions start to rise. Who is always redecorating their sets, who watches their show and most importantly, who are Diddybob and Buddybob really?

Mind My Gap is a psychotic thriller about the confinements of reality, based on the eponymous online graphic novel.

He has been talking about his interest in doing a full length feature adaptation of Mind My Gap ever since the release of the first shorts. But he never did. Until now.

Watch this space...

Mind My Gap is a mixed media project by Dutch artist/filmmaker Rosto. It started with a bunch of rock 'n' roll songs, which were adapted into a graphic novel which incarnated online, which spawned a series of (short) films and a collection of songs again. The short films directly connected to the (online) graphic novel were produced between 2000 and 2013. However, spin off film projects like the Thee Wreckers tetralogy and a Mind My Gap feature film are still in the works.
